How Does Vitamin C remove Hair Color?

Sliced orange with a transparent background.

So here's the thing… this method works wonders on semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair color… but it's also said to be effective against henna color and even permanent black hair color.

We don't entirely know how it works, but experts think it has something to do with the ascorbic acid breaking down the chemical bonds that makes dye stick to hair.

Additionally, the citric acid is said to help break down the dye, making it easier to remove from the hair.

It does not, however, strip the hair like bleach does.

Does Vitamin C damage hair?

Sliced oranges with a glass of orange juice.

It honestly doesn't cause much damage besides drying out your hair a little bit. Vitamin C is acidic, which can actually be good for colored hair.

You see, most chemicals (like hair color) are alkaline in nature. Therefore, when you use acidic products, it actually neutralizes the pH of your hair.

In fact, it's not uncommon to see people using an apple cider vinegar rinse to neutralize the pH and close down the cuticle. A lot of hair products, especially for colored hair, even contain acidic chemicals for the same reason.

That being said, I still recommend using a good hydrating deep conditioner when you're done since the Vitamin C can cause dryness.

How Much Will It Lighten Your Hair?

Deliciously peeled oranges in a basket.

I'm gonna be 100% honest when I say that I've never actually tried this method.

However, after extensive research, I've found that most people report it to lighten about two shades per process… and it's safe to do 3-4 times in a row.

I want to point out that since I said it could remove black hair dye, you should be realistic with your expectations. The results will vary based on your hair type, how many processes it's been through, and other factors.

It probably won't magically transform your black hair to blonde. But it might slowly lighten the black over several processes.

How To Make a Vitamin C Color Remover:

  1. Put some vitamin C tablets in a ziplock bag.
  2. Crush them into a fine powder with a small hammer or rolling pin.
  3. Mix the powder with clarifying shampoo in a plastic bowl.
  4. Apply to damp hair (not drenched) and make sure you've completely covered and saturated the hair. Otherwise, you'll end up with an uneven result.
  5. Cover with a plastic shower cap and let the concoction sit for 30-60 minutes.
  6. Rinse your hair completely to remove all loose color molecules. Shampoo and condition like normal.
  7. Follow up with a hydrating deep conditioning treatment to treat dryness.
